Like much of the US, we are stuck in a “heat dome” which means it’s time to find creative ways to keep cool! Some tips to keep in mind — Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day, stay in shaded areas, drink plenty of water, and be sure to offer kids lots of drinking water throughout the day as well.
Here are some other cheap (and FUN) ways to stay cool too!
Make your own slip and slide!!
Break out the sprinklers!! Rumor has it that these may be on clearance at Target for as low as $1.27 now!
Water Balloon Yo-Yos are quick, easy, and fun to make!
Take advantage of the heat wave and make your own solar powered oven — Emily thought this was SO neat, and it’s very simple to make!!
Get out the hose, and wash the car — this way you can cool off AND have a clean car when you’re done. Multi-tasking at its finest!
…Or maybe try a pretend car wash instead!
Make water comets from ordinary sponges!
One of Emily’s favorite Summertime activities is pretending to do the laundry — a fun water play activity and life-skills lesson all in one!
If you have some paint-with-water books, try having the kids paint with ice instead!
Lastly, try making your own ice cream! This is Mark’s favorite recipe for homemade peach ice cream.. YUM!!!
Have fun and stay cool!!
Terrific ideas! Also, I picked up cotton balls at the store this week just so we could make pretend s’mores — thanks for that inspiration! Keep cool!
Great ideas! I am not looking forward to yet another day of this heat, so we might be using some of your ideas SOON!!
You are brilliant in your simplicity, as always. Thanks so much for the inspiration.
I hope the heat wave breaks soon. Love the idea of the laundry – I need to set one for daughter too.
These are excellent ideas! Thanks for sharing.
love the pic of your daughter doing laundry…that is an awesome idea and something I could do with Monkey!
These are all great ideas, but we have to take it a step further because we are experiencing a water shortages along with 100 plus degrees. We are planning on playing some old board games today. Luckily for us central A/C is the norm here. Even so I have to keep the temp set at a higher temp, like 82 to keep the a/c from running nonstop.
Shared this great list on FB! It won’t let me tag you!
Several of those have been on my to do list for a while, including the sponge bombs, which I’ve had sitting around to do ever since I first saw your post……
Great ideas!! I just bought the circle sprinkler at Target for $1.27!! I was stoked. We haven’t even tried it out yet, but we will soon.
Yay!!! My girls LOVE that sprinkler (and I do too!). I thought it was a bargain at $4.99 — $1.27 is AWESOME!! Have fun! 🙂
Can I set up the laundry for my husband to practice??
I LOVE your water balloon yo-yos idea! I can see us doing this with the kids very soon!
