About the Book:
The Snowy Day by Jack Ezra Keats in a Winter classic that belongs in every child’s library. We adore the illustrations! The story shares the magic of an overnight snowstorm that has covered everything as far as the eye can see. Peter, the main character, has a sense of wonder and enthusiasm for snow that young readers will find to be contagious! It is easy to see why The Snowy Day is a Caldecott Medal award-winning
Materials Needed:
- Shaving Cream
- School Glue
- Paintbrush
- Construction Paper (red, brown)
- Thick Card Stock Paper (blue)
- Pencil
- Scissors
The Snowy Day Craft:
In a paper bowl, add shaving cream and school glue in a 1:1 mixture. Next, invite your child to use a craft stick to stir up the mixture until it is well-combined. After that, your child can use a paintbrush to spread the puffy snow paint onto the blue card stock paper.
Next, use a pencil to draw the shape of Peter’s body onto red construction paper, and a small circle onto brown construction paper for Peter’s face. Invite your child to use scissors to carefully cut out the shapes. Younger kids may need some grown-up help with cutting the construction paper. If you are working with a large group of kids, I suggest having several of these shapes pre-cut ahead of time. Invite your child to add Peter to the puffy snow landscape painting. Set aside for the paint to dry completely, which may take a few days. Once it is dry, the paint will be light and fluffy!
