Love Painting for Kids

Do you have watercolor paints and masking tape on-hand? Here’s a quick and easy kid-friendly painting project with stunning results — just in time for Valentine’s Day!

To make your own “LOVE” painting, use masking tape to spell out the word LOVE on heavy watercolor paper. Tip — use a craft stick or the back of a spoon to press the masking tape down firmly. Next, invite the kids for some watercolor painting fun!!

You may want to encourage your child to cover the paper with paint, but there is really no wrong way to do this. My girls enjoyed experimenting with different color combinations and patterns! They both enjoy painting, so this project was a big hit!!

Allow the paint to dry completely, then carefully peel off the masking tape to reveal your beautiful painting! I added some black masking tape as a frame for ours. You can display these in your home, and/or scan them to use on printed Valentine cards to give to friends and family!

The kids were having so much fun with this, so I couldn’t resist giving this painting project a try either.  I love how each one of our paintings is completely unique!

Have fun!!

  1. Dear Valerie,

I’ll be honest. I’m amazed that Clara was able to resist making hers 100% purple!

    Love,

  2. I am SO doing this with my girls. Thanks for the great idea!

  3. How beautifully they turned out! They should be framed and proudly displayed!

    • Thank you!! They were so proud of their artwork, and it worked out perfectly because I was in need of some newer pieces to put on display! 🙂

  4. I love this project! I am planning to do this with my Keepers at Home group this Thursday…as a sort of reverse stenciling lesson. Thank you for the beautiful and creative inspiration.

  5. Love this! Just did it with my 3 and 5 year old! 🙂
