This little gem of a handmade gift idea comes from Highlights High Five magazine — rainbow sprinkles to use as a fun topping for yogurt or ice cream! As soon as Emily saw this craft featured in the December issue, she begged to make it!
If you don’t already subscribe to Highlights High Five, I highly recommend it for a holiday gift! It is a fun, educational, ad-free magazine geared specifically for kids ages 2-6. Emily loves receiving a special magazine in the mail just for her every month!
To make your own rainbow sprinkles, invite your child over to sort some fruity cereal by color into zippered bags…
Seal up the bags, and use a rolling pin to crush the cereal into tiny bits! Clara was a big help with this!! FUN!!
Next, layer the crushed cereal into a jar, similar to a sand-art project! We recycled empty jelly jars, mason jars, and baby food jars for this… I love using things we already have on-hand!
Add some fabric and/or ribbon to your jar, and give to someone special!
Have fun!!
Disclosure: I will be contributing crafts for upcoming issues of Highlights High Five for 2011 (Yay!!). All opinions are my own.
ooo love these! I saw it in the magazine but I had forgotten about it!
They are so much fun to make! ๐ Enjoy!!
Dear Valerie,
My (obviously high quality) rolling pin is to be used for baking, not for crushing various things.
Love,
Mark
I’m pretty sure your rolling pin came from the dollar section at Target…. hey, it works! ๐
What a fun gift! And how exciting that you’ll be contributing to the magazine in 2011 – congratulations!!!
I love how Clara got in on the fun gift-making too!
Thanks!! I’m excited to work with Highlights High Five — Emily’s subscribed to it since she was 2!
We are subscribing to Hi5, and how exciting that you will be contributing! I can’t wait.

Thank you!! My first project is scheduled to print June 2011 — seems so far away, but it’s so exciting!

Yay!! Thanks so much, Christy! Enjoy!!!
I just wanted to come back and let you know that I subscribed through your Amazon link. I have always considered subscribing to the magazine, but your crafts and ideas made it a no brainer. I’m looking forward to it!
oh how cool! I need to subscribe to that it’s on my to do list.
Great! The kiddos will love it! ๐
Looks like they had a lot of fun doing this.
๐ It’s great fun!!
That is a cute idea. It would be good sprinkled on yogurt or ice cream.
Emily tried some in yogurt and said it was “tasty and good”. ๐
Who doesn’t need a little bit of rainbow sprinkles yo brighten their day?
(Oh, and “Rock on with your bad self,” you paragon of the printed page, you!)
LOL Your comments crack me up! Rainbow sprinkles are always welcome here!
I couldn’t comment under the cookie post bc I guess your giveaway is closed. Just got around to whipping up a batch! Awesome. I’m going to tinker with the recipe to make them a little more healthy (add oats, flax seed, sub. wheat flour, etc…) Great recipe for a playdate snack.
That sounds fantastic!!! I’m so happy you tried them — they didn’t last long in this house! ๐
So happy you will be contributing to High Five. My son and I really enjoy that magazine. Smart move on their part! :o)
That’s so sweet, Mena! Thank you!!
Brilliant as always! I bet I could find some organic one to make for Logan’s yogurt cups in the morning. He would LOVE that!
