Quite possibly the most fun craft EVER!
These rocket straws are a super quick craft project that can lead to hours of active play time fun!! Emily declared this was the “most fun craft project EVER”, and the kids have been playing with them indoors (and out) ever since. Yay for easy projects that keep the kids entertained for long periods of time!!
During a recent trip to Target, I picked up some of these extra wide straws and was inspired to combine these with some old envelopes to make the rockets. You can even recycle junk mail envelopes for this! The kids can decorate the rockets however they would like with crayons, markers, or stickers.
To start, seal an empty envelope, then draw lines as shown. Invite your child to cut along the lines (or help him with this step, if necessary). The corner of the envelope will form the top of the rocket.
Next, cut off the bottom.
Then use tape to seal up the sides of the rocket. Leave the bottom edge open.
Invite your child over to decorate her rocket!! Added bonus points for wearing rose-colored glasses. Super groovy & stylish, yes?
You can tape on strips of tissue paper streamers too!
Insert the straw into the bottom of the rocket, and go outside for launch time!! A short quick puff of air is all it takes for these to take flight!
The kids were so proud of their rockets and have plans to make several more of them for contests to see who’s rocket can travel the furthest, highest, fastest, etc.
Have fun!!
Dear Valerie,
Just think of the spit-balls you could launch with those straws!
Love,
Mark
Ha!!
What part of Target did you find those cool straws?
I think I found them in the seasonal/Easter aisle. Hope this helps! 🙂
What a super fun idea Valerie. Loved it totally. Wondering if it’ll work with the thinner straws. Will give it a shot anyway.
Those straws are pure smiley fun!! The first thing I thought of was spit ball too. 🙂 Love the idea of the rocket…no Target here in my west corner but I still think I could pull something like this off with what I have here. Thanks for the i (colourful) inspiration.
This really looks like fun! What pretty rockets!
I can’t wait to try this with my girls! If only the nearest target wasn’t 1 hour away we could do it today:o( Thanks for sharing!
Looks really fun!
I believe this kind of activity could make the kiddos pass out, with all the blowing- another added bonus to the fun! ;0)
