Calorie-Free S’Mores for Pretend Play

Want all the fun of making s’mores, but without the sugar-high afterwards?? These pretend play s’mores are SO easy to make, and they are calorie-free so the kiddos can make (and pretend to eat) as many s’mores as they could possibly want!!

First, make up your pretend campfire — arrange stones in a circle and fill with sticks and colored tissue paper to look like fire!

Next, gather your ingredients for s’mores — you will need graham crackers (recycled corrugated cardboard), chocolate (scraps of brown felt), and marshmallows (cheap cotton balls from the dollar store).

Assemble your s’mores!!

Don’t they look delicious??

Roast your cotton ball marshmallows on your pretend campfire!

Blow on them, if they get too hot! Be careful not to burn your tongue!!

Sandwich the cotton ball marshmallow between the felt chocolate and cardboard graham crackers.

Yum, yum, yummy!!!

Next, do a quick swap w/ cotton rounds and rounded felt squares for MELTED marshmallows and chocolate…. So delicious!!

Serve immediately on “fancy” plates (recycled yogurt lids)

They are ALMOST good enough to eat!!

Then, start the process all over again (and again)!!

Super easy, lots of fun, and very frugal!!

Have fun!!

  1. Dear Valerie,

Huh. These s’mores sure taste.. like they have a lot of fiber. I think I have cotton-mouth.

    Love,
    Mark

  2. So fun! You are so clever!

  3. AWESOME! What a fun pretend camping set up.

  4. This is a fun idea! Perfect for my nephews that camp during the summer and miss it during the winter!

    • Yay!!! I think it would be great for indoor play when it’s too cold/rainy to be outside. Have fun!!

  5. That looks like fun and they are so easy to make!

  6. Absolutely adorable. You never cease to amaze me with your crafts.

  7. Very simple. I like it! And, I think I have everything in the cupboard. Of course, it’s camping season, so in Montana we’re never far from the real thing, either 🙂

  8. Oh man, Mark already made my joke……. Those sure look fun!

Hi, I have a few suggestions of books I have for elementary children for the theme of camping or vacation. Enjoy! ;o)

    “Curious George Goes Camping” By Margret & H. A. Rey’s (Scholastic, 1990)

“Camping Out” from The Busy World of Richard Scarry (Simon Spotlight,1994)

“Nathan’s Fishing Trip” By Lulu Declacre (Scholastic, 1988) About an Elephant and a mouse that go fishing and all the things that can happen.

“When I Go Camping with Grandma” By Marion Dane Bauer & Illustrated by Allen Garns (Published by BridgeWater Th Book is a trademark of Troll Communications L.L.C., 2001)

“Berenstain Bears & too Much Vacation” by Stan & Jan Berenstain (Random House-New York, 1989)

“The Night Before Summer vacation” By Natasha Wing & illustrated by Julie Durrell (Scholastic, 2003)

“Rainbow Fish” (1992) & “Rainbow Fish to the Rescue”(1995). Both books by Marcus Pfister and printed by North-South books INC., New York. Then for a craft you could make rainbow fish with 1 or more sequins, depending which fish they want to make.

For a craft with Camping, you could make musical instruments to use around the campfire.; guitar, shakers, rattles, tambourine or bell shakers or bell bracelet, for the wrist or ankle. Shakers can be make with beans, rice, sand, pebbles, or beads in a film container, toilet paper roll (covering the bottom & top) or an empty Pringles potato chip can, etc.
I hope these ideas help. 😮 ) Clara

Here is a site where I found a fishing game that would go with your camping theme.

  12. Love these s’mores. Using the cotton rounds is brilliant, much easier than cutting up white felt. I think I will be using them for a variety of crafts from now on.

  13. This is such a clever idea! The smores look so realistic and the fire is wonderful.

  14. Love how you find fun an inexpensive stuff, but this has to be the saddest thing ever. I would seriously cry if someone told me I was gonna be making s’mores and then gave me this.

  15. This is so cute! We actually made a campfire and S’mores for Princess’s American Girl Dolls last week that were very similar to these. I LOVE the bigger version for the kids! I may have to surprise mine with a Living Room “Camp Out” this week and make these!

  16. My son’s theme at school this week is camping and they just did a very similar project yesterday. Love it!
