Bug hunting is probably one of Emily’s favorite activities. Even if it’s raining outside, she likes to hunt for bugs inside the house! I think she inherited this bug-loving gene mostly from Mark. Although when I was a kid, I was known to have a fascination with caterpillars, but I think most kids are naturally curious about creepy crawlers. I gave her a mason jar, but those twist top ziplock containers work very well too. She gets lots of use out of her magnifying glass, and we try to identify any bugs she finds.
One thing we don’t do is keep the bugs for very long. I always tell her they need to go outside to be with their friends.
This little activity can keep her busy for a long time.
Sunnyboy likes bug hunting too! We don’t collect them in a jar yet but he likes to say hello to any bugs we come across. I’m sure he’ll be out looking with a jar and a magnifying glass when he’s a little older 🙂
It reminds me of catching lightning bugs (or more commonly fire flies) when I was a kid. I love it when they go out to explore the natural world.
We love bugs over here too. Logan is actually our buggy guy. Although he is going through a phase where he is sure every bug he comes across is going to eat him. lol!
Nice pictures too. 🙂

@ sunnymama — How cute! I bet he’ll be a real bug explorer too someday.
@ Ivy — Oh, I remember catching fire flies all the time as a kid. It’s not quite warm enough here yet, but soon I’m sure we’ll be out catching them just about every night.
@ Val in the Rose Garden — That’s so funny! Emily keeps asking if certain bugs will bite or sting her. I love watching her learn about things like that.
Where did you get that magnifying glass?
The magnifying glass came from Target’s dollar zone section. Emily loves it!
