Father’s Day Gift Kids Can Make — BBQ Sauce

Looking for an easy Father’s Day gift idea that the kids can make?? The girls and I have been hard at work making and canning batches of homemade BBQ sauce for a gift to Mark this Father’s Day! ((Shhhhhhh… it’s a surprise!)) Mark loves to cook on the grill. I’m pretty sure this is because of his love for danger. He lives on the edge, I tell you!

This was both a fun and educational activity for the girls. Plus, I love how they were actively involved with making a gift for their Dad! Both of the girls enjoyed taking turns measuring out the ingredients.

Grinding up the fresh pepper was a huge hit with Clara!

And squeezing lemon juice from a lemon? What could be better than that??

Later, I covered the bristles of a basting brush with masking tape, and invited Clara to paint the handle in acrylic paint with Mark’s favorite colors.

She was so proud of the brush she hand-painted just for Daddy!

Have I convinced you to give it a try yet?? You can find the recipe we used (and loved) here on FoodNetwork.com. Note: After reading the reviews, I decided to lower the sugar content a bit. Experiment to see what your family loves best!

Have fun!!

  1. Cute idea!

  2. I’ve passed on a lot of Father’s Day DIY gift ideas that I’ve seen, but this one is great!! I think we’re gonna give it a whirl.

  3. I like this idea! We just got a new grill and Daddy is obsessed with it, so BBQ sauce would make a good father’s day gift.

For Mark, i think i’d recommend adding bacon, too. 🙂

  5. Mmmmm barbecue sauce! Gotta love that stuff.

  6. FANTASTIC idea!

  7. So fun! It wouldn’t be too hard to seal the paintbrush handle, either, with a quick couple of coats of varnish, to make it last longer.

  8. This is a great idea! Thank you for sharing. I haven’t bought any bbq sauce from the store since I realized they all have high fructose corn syrup in them! I will definitely use this as an alternative. Do you have any idea how long you can keep it? Thanks again! Feel free to connect with me on my blog, Couponing 4 a Difference.

If it is canned properly, it can be stored for a very long time in the pantry. Once it is opened, you can store in the refrigerator for several weeks. Although ours never seems to last very long… 😉

  9. Great idea. Waaaay better than a new tie!! Thanks for the post and inspiration!

  10. Love this idea! I am wondering how many jars this recipe made? 🙂

Great question, Jamie! I believe this recipe made about 2 and 1/2 smaller jars of sauce. Hope this helps!
