Mark here. With this project, Valerie and the girls were not repurposing all of my stuff but…
Things don’t always go according to plan, even at the Frugal Family Fun house. Sometimes crafts don’t turn out like they were supposed to. You might call them “awful”, if you are being nice.
Valerie and Emily were attempting to make a “Scratch-n-Sniff” rainbow for St. Patrick’s Day. Here is how NOT to do it.
Step One: Paint a canvas with water…
Step Two: Sprinkle some red unsweetened powdered drink mix on top.
Step Three: Repeat with all of the colors of the rainbow
Step Four: Make some (hideous) Bacon????? Emily got a big kick out of this.
Wow. That was awful, and you should feel bad for making it. Color blind people could do better. This is seriously the saddest rainbow I have ever seen. It goes “blood red, bright red, burnt red, toilet stain (if you are generous) and cajun”.
Does it smell nice? No. It smells like some sort of mutant fruit. Not a good mutant fruit either. (I’m looking at you, Grapple!)
My suggestion? Try to recycle it. However, even the recycling company will not take it, and it will be left at the curb for animals to peck at and get sick.
Forget this! Let’s go play Invisible Basketball instead!
I hope you enjoyed “Frugal Family Craft Fail” Of course, none of this was Emily’s fault. Craft failures happen all of the time — you won’t know what works unless you try!
Dear Mark,
This is the first time I've ever seen you use the words "hideous" and "bacon" in the same sentence. You're right… it was THAT bad! But it was a good laugh!!
Love,
Valerie
Very sad – and it sounds so promising – maybe with a different combination of drink mix flavors?
I was going to ask if Mark was the one leading the project ๐ The comment about Grapple made me laugh.
Ha! I take full responsibility for this flop! Emily and I were laughing so hard at the bacon rainbow. We tried fixing it up a bit, but it was pretty hopeless. Ah well!!
Oh my gosh — this seriously had me laughing out loud! Louder and louder as I read each passing sentence.
There's gotta be at least one "oops" out of all the "yeahs!"
Thanks for the chuckle – I needed it!
LOL, you two always crack me up!
Haha, I'm sorry your craft was a flop, but really, what's the purpose of a craft? To have some fun and make people happy? Seems you did both ๐
But you did make a frugal craft. You made fun. Not only with the girls but for everyone who had great fun and many laughs while reading about it.
LOL about the bacon.
Oh my…….. I hadn't thought of bacon until I read that, but now that I have I can't get it out of my mind.
Oh Mark you gave me a good laugh. Thank you. My Hubby even wanted to know what I was laughing at. Maybe you could sell this piece to the bacon museum.
But Valerie even your flops are fun.
"toilet stain" should be a new crayon color. This made me laugh! Thanks for sharing. ๐
that is hilarious! we had a similar fail with a similar product!
Too funny! I love it when people post flops, and Mark is just so funny that this is even better. At least Emily thought it was funny and didn't get upset that the project went awry.
MMMMM…bacon.
I'm laughing too hard… how funny! And the "bacon" looks too real… too bad it doesn't smell like bacon – now that would be YUMMY! ๐
The "you should feel bad for doing it", line is what really kills me. FUNNY! I say just label the painting- "bacon at sunset" and hang it in the kitchen.
The writing is what makes this so funny. Thanks for a good laugh!
Even though it didn't turn out quite so pretty – it definitely looked like a fun process. Sometimes that is better than cute:)
I had read about some really great ideas that failed during my implementation. It happens! (The science experiments are the worst~they're waiting expectantly and NOTHING happens!:(
Oh well, live and learn! I love your attitude about the whole thing. Great sense of humor!
Ah ha ha ha ha ha! I literally laughed out loud at your description of the colors! ๐
I love your blog, many entries are in my "add star" Google Reader file!
Thanks for the giggle!
LOL..we have all had craft fails and misphaps – if you never try, you never know how it will turn out – was worth a shot.
One thing that was done right was to do it outside – getting Koolaid out of carpet is impossible (alas, a lesson learned the hard way).
wow it turned out so beautiful ๐ Glad I can't smell the bacon rainbow through the screen!
Hi. Love your blog. Wanted to share my blog with your family!
http://wakemanwackos.blogspot.com/
This cracks me up. The comic relief of this project alone may haven been worth the effort!
Too funny ๐
Well, I think that fact that you posted about it instead of choosing to ignore it makes it a success. Truthfully though I was trying to imagine the scratch-and-sniffness (not a word I know!) of the bacon part and I think that's what made ME laugh! Love your blog–so many wonderful ideas!
You just made me pee I am laughing so hard . LOVE it.
Craft fails are just part of what we do but you made it hilarious and entertaining.
That is funny, thanks for sharing, stuff like that happens to me all the time. Some people like bacon though..check out this comedian, it's a funny bit on bacon…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nT9P8MMpsE
Very funny- I can hear the glee in Mark's voice!
LOL… I'm glad you can laugh at the not-so-successful projects!
That is super creative! I love it! Have you thought of mixing it into fingerpaint? Would it have the same scent properties? I'm going to have to try that!
I'd call it a successful experiment! ha,ha!
Jen
@ Jen — You could call it that, if you're being nice. LOL
