This video tutorial is great for learning how to make a simple kite! With just a few common household items you probably already have on-hand, you can make a simple kite in about 2 minutes from start to finish. My kids and I love making these kites and spending the afternoon at a local park flying them. The best part is, this simple kite only needs a light breeze to fly. Perfect for beginners!
To make a simple kite, you will need:
- A Sheet of Paper (8 ½” x 11″ will do)
- Bamboo Skewer
- Clear Tape
- Cotton String
- Safety Scissors (to cut string)
- Hole Punch
- Party Streamers (optional)
Here is a video tutorial showing how to make a simple kite of your own:
These kites are my favorite ones to make with a large group of kids because they are so quick and easy to put together. Many times I invite the kids to decorate the sheet of paper with stickers, crayons, or markers. We have even been known to bring the materials with us to the park and make the kites right there. I hope these kites inspire you to play outdoors with the kids and create some wonderful memories together! Kite making has become one of our favorite ways to spend a windy Spring day.
Have fun!

Fabulous craft, the kids will love making, and flying this kite. Thanks heaps Valerie.
I LOVE kite making! Adorable photos and wishes for continued fun!
What did you use to make the I shape that you wrapped the string around?
A piece of cardstock paper (sometime I use a piece of board from a cereal box), cut into an “I” shape. Hope this helps! 🙂
How much string do you arp around the I for each kite? Thanks!
