It happened right before my very eyes — Emily turned 6 years old!!! We had a fun time at the zoo, and went out for lunch to celebrate. When we got home, Clara crashed for a nap, so Emily and I snuck in this super-quick Spring craft project.
For this Spring tree sculpture, make a base of green play dough to insert a twig for your tree as shown.
Make some small balls of pink play dough and attach them to the ends of the branches to form blossoms.
Continue adding blossoms until the tree is full of them.
If Spring isn’t coming soon enough for you, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands!
Have fun!!

@ Mark — *phew* For a minute there I thought you were going to be upset since we used the last of the green play dough. I know how intently you were working on that claymation booger movie…. Achoooo!!
March 18th, 2010 on 4:27 pm
@ Hayley — Thank you! It's such a quick and easy craft. Emily was done in just a few minutes! It's our new centerpiece for our kitchen table.

March 18th, 2010 on 8:35 pm
Happy birthday to Emily! And, I love the tree. It will be a good one to have bookmarked, for a down day, when the kids want to craft, but I want a nap
They'll think I'm a genius!

What a beautiful idea. I need some spring flowering trees that don't make my kiddos sneeze! Will put this on the agenda for tomorrow.
Oh, and thanks for your kind words today, I always appreciate it!
March 18th, 2010 on 9:08 pm

Thanks for all the wonderful birthday wishes! I am passing them along to the birthday girl!
March 18th, 2010 on 9:41 pm
@ An Almost Unschooling Mom — It would be perfect for that! I almost called it a "slacker" craft, since it really doesn't take a lot of effort. Emily enjoyed this so much, she made two of them!
March 18th, 2010 on 9:45 pm
That is so simple and so cute. The colors just pop!
March 18th, 2010 on 10:48 pm
Dear Valerie,
If we are out of green play-doh, I will have to resort to .. actual booger models.
So realistic!
/eeeeeew.
Love,
"Diggin'" Mark
p.s. Don't throw away my collection! That mason jar is OFF LIMITS.
March 19th, 2010 on 7:51 am
@ Mark — Note to self: Get more green play dough.
March 19th, 2010 on 8:51 am
Mark, let me just say EWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Hmmm, how I can I use this. I have some sculpey my kids have been dying to try out. Now would the twig catch fire in the oven while cooking the sculpey?
March 19th, 2010 on 9:00 am
What a great quick and easy craft! Very nice!
March 19th, 2010 on 9:23 am
@ Ticia — Sculpey will work, just skip the baking part. You don't have to bake it. Have fun!!

March 20th, 2010 on 10:10 pm
This is such a great idea!! Can't wait to try it with my son.
March 22nd, 2010 on 1:13 pm
Great idea! Instead of playdough I will make salt dough and colour it!
No need to bake it, but that will also be an option!
Thanks!
March 22nd, 2010 on 5:48 pm
Looks just like a nice bit of Spring you guys created
April 22nd, 2010 on 2:33 pm
I used this in my Japanese language classroom a few weeks ago as I taught the students about cherry blossoms (sakura) and cherry blossom parties (hanami) in Japan. It was a huge hit! 2nd graders loved it, and for 5th grade, I had them also write a haiku about spring, copy it onto the plate, and make the tree in the middle. They were all so proud and wanted to take their craft home that very minute!
April 22nd, 2010 on 3:41 pm
@ Teacher Tom — Oh, I do hope so! They are so much fun to make!
@ Ladner Sensei — I'm so happy you did this! How wonderful!!
