Do you remember how all the flowers seemed so beautiful when you were a kid — even the dandelions? That is the concept behind today’s Slacker Saturday activity. Today we made dandelion bouquets. Emily got to spend lots of time outside, and we have the added benefit of enjoying a dandelion-free lawn! Send the kids out with a basket to collect the dandelions (try to do this before they go to seed). When all the dandelions are picked, get out some small glasses with a little water and let the kids arrange the dandelions into little bouquets.

I had to laugh at this post. When I was about 7 or 8 (my daughter’s age) I did this exact thing – picked a bouquet and put them in a little Dixie Cup next to my bed.
the next morning, I could not open my eyes. I have terrible allergies – and sleeping next to dandelions caused me to suffer through my first case of pink eye!
My daughter has asthma now, and I still suffer terribly from seasonal allergies, so we’ll just leave those dandelions outdoors!

Now that you’ve got your fabulous bouquet, you can watch the flowers turn to seed heads, which they will try their darndest to do even though they are cut. Then you can ponder the mysteries of plant life, and ask yourselves, are cut flowers still alive?

My girls love dandelions and they pick them for all of our neighbors!!
Have you painted with Dandelions? I found this on another blog and my girls loved it.

@ aprilfoolwed — I didn’t even think about seasonal allergies, but you are so right! Better just leave them outside then!
@ nettlejuice — Really? I didn’t think the cut ones would still go to seed. That’s amazing!

My daughter loved dandelions last year (they haven’t started to sprout this year yet). It was fun to watch her get so excited about them, but I couldn’t help thinking,
“Ahh… now if only I could teach her to pluck them by the root!”

Thanks for the idea – we did this over the weekend too. Of course my daughter got upset when we ran out of “Dandies.”

Thanks you, sunnymama! It’s funny that you mentioned that because since I have posted about dandelion bouquets we have been repeating this activity every few days in our front yard, and Emily really enjoys it. I really appreciate the link too, thanks!
