5. Sylo by D. J. MacHale

Sylo is book one in a trilogy series. Takes place in the near future on Pemberwick Island, Maine. Themes include the importance of communication, and the dangers of advances in medicine. Fascinating book!

4. The Supernaturalists by Eoin Colfer

In a metal city, all orphans are brought to an orphanage that is anything but ordinary to be used as subjects for unethical experiments. The book explores loss of skills due to future technological advances, the importance of family, and dangers of pollution. A great and quick read!

3. The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Giver belongs on every dystopian book lover’s bookshelf. This book explores the relationship between memories and identity. Themes include the questioning of authority, and the usefulness of emotions. The importance of conformity is also explored. The Giver is one of Emily’s all-time favorite dystopian books!

2. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Do not mistake Uglies for chick lit! This book is the first in a series. The novel takes places in the distant future when characters refer to our present generations as “rusties”. If you liked The Hunger Games, you will love this book. Explores the value of appearances and social themes in future technologies. Highly recommended by Emily!

1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games features some of the most fiercely strong female characters. Emily could not put down this book! It is very well-written and full of action. Readers will want to continue with the rest of The Hunger Game series.
