Make Your Own Paint!

Kids Craft:

Make your own paint using eggs and chalk with the help of this guest post from the lovely Rachel of KidsActivitiesBlog.com (Thank you, Rachel!) If you haven’t already seen her site, it is loaded with plenty of inspiring crafts and activities for kids!

Tip: This craft is designed for kids who know not to put paint in their mouths. Remember to wash hands after handling raw egg.

Yup. Raw egg and the leftover bits from your chalk bucket. That is all you need.

Soak your chalk bits in water (keep the colors separated in the water, a muffin tin works well for this) for 15 minuets or so, or until slightly “mushy”. The cheaper “dollar” chalk tends to become a smoother paint consistency – but the colors are not as bright as the name brand chalks. Chalk Pastels make the most brilliant paints!!

Use a hammer and gently pound the chalk until it is a powdery paste. You can also just “mush” the chalk stick if it has soaked long enough. We break our chalk up on our patio and just hose it off when we are done. If you do not have access to a patio, you can use a zippered plastic bag to contain the mess and crush wherever.

Separate the egg yolk from the egg white, and add the yolk to the powder until it is a paint-able consistency.

Our kids have as much fun creating the colors as they do painting with them!

Note from Valerie — All fantastic ideas, thank you, Rachel!! The kids and I cannot wait to give this a try over the weekend.

Wishing you and your lovely families a wonderful (and fun-filled) weekend!!
