Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Some of my readers requested crafts that use up empty oatmeal canisters, so I thought this was a great way to incorporate them into a craft and a Dr. Seuss theme day. To make your own Cat-in-the-Hat hat, you will need an empty oatmeal canister, a paper plate, and some paints (we used Crayola Washable paint).
Attach the paper plate to the oatmeal canister. There is a rim on the edge of the canister that the plate can be attached to. Trace the bottom of the canister onto the paper plate, and cut out the hole. Slide the canister through the hole, and you have an easy hat brim.
Trace lines for your child to paint the red and white stripes. This is a good time to introduce or review patterns with your child.
While the paint was drying, we read The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham:
These are perfect beginner reading books, and they happen to be some of Emily’s favorites.
Of course, what Dr. Seuss birthday celebration is complete without green eggs and ham?
