Favorite Summer Recipe — Peach Ice Cream

Purchasing an ice cream maker…. is it worth it? I say “YES!” Here’s why:
  1. Save Money — Have you seen the price of ice cream lately? Making your own ice cream can be significantly less expensive than the comparable store-bought ice cream.
  2. Size Matters — Like many grocery products, ice cream containers are shrinking. A lot. That means you are paying the same amount for LESS product.
  3. Control Over Ingredients — No high fructose corn syrup in this ice cream!
  4. It’s FUN — Kids love to measure ingredients, press the buttons on the blender, and watch the ice cream being made right before their eyes. It’s like magic!
Now, get out your stretchy pants. Here’s Mark’s famous recipe for peach ice cream. Please note that he takes his ice cream quite seriously. He does not mess around.

Homemade Peach Ice Cream

For peach syrup:
3 Large Peaches, pitted and diced
1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
For Ice Cream:
1 Cup Half and Half
1 Large Egg
3 Cups Heavy Cream
3/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
1 Tbsp. Vanilla Extract (not imitation!)
For Peach Syrup:
Add pitted and diced peaches to blender and blend until liquified. Transfer to a small saucepan. Add 1/4 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Boil until mixture has reduced and thickened. Chill in the refrigerator.
For Ice Cream:
Combine the rest of the ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth. Transfer to ice cream machine and run cycle according to manufacturers instructions. Add the peach syrup the last minute of processing. Transfer to a freezer-safe container and let the ice cream continue to firm up in the freezer overnight. Serve with caramel topping.
Emily, do not be alarmed. We’ll be sure to save some for you when you get home *burp* …er….maybe.

  5. @ Entertaining Mom — This time of year we get all sorts of peachy! We just can't help ourselves!!

@ Val in the Rose Garden — Oh my, I don't know how your going to fit an ice cream maker in your freezer! It must be completely full by now! Hee hee, you simply must try to get it in there though. It's soooo worth it!

  6. Did anyone ever try the watermelon ice cream? I've tried it a short while ago and it's great if you like watermelon (I know some people who don't).

I have published a recipe a while ago, you can find it here: watermelon ice cream.

We also love our ice cream maker. I usually just make sorbet or a variation on the eggless vanilla ice cream because I am too lazy to make the custard. I see you don't cook the egg, though. Maybe I'll try that. We get our eggs from a pretty reputable farm.

Oh yum! I just got back from a two hour walk in hot weather and that looks like heaven on earth right about now.

We loved using our ice cream maker (wedding gift) for quite a few years. We've had it packed away for awhile, but I've been thinking about taking it out again. Our son is allergic to milk and eggs, among other things, so no traditional ice cream for us lately, but I found an absolutely delicious coconut milk-based ice cream that I'd love to try to make at home (they even have a mint chocolate chip version…divine).

  10. Thank you for convincing me to get an ice cream maker, I've been wanting one forever!
